In a continuous effort to raise the performance standard and to vary the music repertoire of Malaysian musicians, composers and arrangers, ASWARA in collaboration with Orkestra RTM will organize a Big Band Music workshop. Targeting professional musicians, semi-professional musicians and new music graduates, the purpose of the music workshop is to promote Malaysian songs composed and arranged in the Big Band line up.
Orkestra RTM has recorded an album titled ˇ°A JAZZ TRIBUTE TO MALAYSIAN SONGSˇ±, which will be launched and distributed to all Malaysian embassies overseas, libraries and resource centres in December 2008. As found in the album, fourteen (14) Malaysian traditional, popular and newly composed songs had been arranged and recorded in the Big Band line up. In this workshop, tutors and participants will study, rehearse and perform the existing material in the appropriate style. For the composers and arrangers participants, new compositions and arrangements shall be written for the final concert at the end of the workshop. Orkestra RTM has the option to record these newly written compositions and arrangements in their next album in 2009.
For a Big Band line up of 17 piece, 4 trumpets, 3 trombones, 5 saxophones, piano, guitar, bass, drums and percussion, the total number of participants is targeted and limited at two (2) participants every part; that is, only thirty four (34) participants as musicians; and ten (10) composer-arranger participants. Tutors shall consist of professional musicians of saxophones, trumpet, trombone, rhythm instruments, and experienced composer-arrangers.
