We are the first orchestra in Malaysia, set up in 1961 under the direction of Dato Ahmad Merican, the 13 piece band was known as Orkes Radio Malaya led by late jazz pianist Alfonso Soliano. In 1967, the size has increased to 30 piece, then known as RTM Orkestra under the direction of Dato Johari Salleh and Gus Steyn, Datuk Ahmad Nawab, Jimmy Boyle, Tan Chong Yew,Richard Hoon were among the composers, writers and arrangers which has grew up with the orchestra.

In 1980's new and talented musicians like Ruslan Imam, Ramlan Imam,Ahmad Ali, Hassan Ahmad, Jonet Tuah were among the musicians Today, RTM orchestra with 30 piece members comprising of young and talented musicians under the direction of Dato Mokhzani Ismail, Jimmy ali ( the manager )and Mohd AsnawiI (leader). Among others include the arranger/pianist Isabella Pek, Johan Pochin, Yap Yen(concert master), Razak Rahman and Eddie Kismilardy.

The orchestra was set up playing and recording mainly for the purpose of broadcasting through the national radio and television channels, RTM. Over the years, we have expanded our performance arena to include international music and song festivals, royal functions, mega concerts, and smaller events like in-house farewell parties and staff celebration. Among the main concerts were Malam Simfoni Irama Malaysia 2006, Simfoni Putrajaya (holds Malaysia Book of Records as the largest live telecast outdoor orchestra performance), Konsert Setiakawan 2008.

We compose and record patriotic songs of campaign nature, assist in school orchestras competition, and tour the country and the world when the opportunities arise. As the music landscape changed drastically in the country, we expect a more exciting and challenging environment as we continue to serve the needs of the nation and the people.

Orchestra has weekly program in Klasik Nasional (Every Sunday,7.30pm to 8pm) and Jazz on Traxx (Every Tuesday from 10.30 till 11pm).
